You will probably not get food stamps on the first day you visit even if you are applying for emergency aid. Just make sure that you follow any instructions that you are given and fulfill any obligations that are required of you. You may be asked to sign up at your local unemployment office to help you find work. Getting food stamps might not be your idea of a good way to get by, but there is no shame in using help that is available and especially when you have already contributed to its development.
